Dubshack here and I can lend some facts to the story. We brought in Dex and Keith for '95 Brockout on Feb 11, 1995. (We will be assembling and posting all the details of that historic night in a seperate story for Golden Era Jungle) but before I go on I must call out that Ripe gets full, complete and unconditional love and props from Dubshack for sorting out the Morgan Street Venue for that night. Roger, a good friend of mine (how ya been?) back at that time, came through in a major way. Another example of how all the Chi-Junglists worked together at the time. Now getting back to the story, after '95 Brockout!, the next day Dex, Keith and I flew to NY for the event on the 12th that Cassien has posted above. Lion sorted out the details through Mixed Bag/Konkrete Jungle. MB/KJ took great care of us and they were also very early supporters of the golden era.
Now to that picture above. That's not actually '95 Brockout! That picture was taken at our clubnight Brockout! at the Liar's Club in 1997. Dextrous made his historic return to Chicago on 4-17-97. You'll see Phantom 45 in the background at about 12:02AM while Dex sets up his first plate, "Bad Boy Soun' Chicago Remix." This dubplate opened '95 Brockout! and had no less than 4 wheels on that night at Liar's Club before he made it into the the second minute of the song. On 4-18-97 Dextrous appeared live on DJ Snuggles radio show "Strictly Jungle". We also have that tape wher Dex explains some of the history and circumstances around the creation of his early work. But, that's another story...
Cassien, respect to you, no doubt. |

just visiting back through the archives @ cassien : Where you at man! You were a staple in the NYC jungle scene i remember well. You always played good hard sets in small weird places. I remember one place was a yoga studio right on the boarder of chinatown and little italy. there was canvas all over the floor and you couldn't dance so we'ed head bang our way through your set!..kick ass take names |

Okay, so we want to be sticklers here.. Whats funny is.. everyone names this city and that city.. and you all forget one thing..
Toronto had a better scene then all of america combined at one point.
and yeah DJ Hype played in LA way back like in 1992 before he did the whole "I won't go to america thing"..
But come on.. If you had a jungle tape and it was back in the day.. 80% chance that DJ was from Chicago or that tape was from Dubshack.. Scott and Kay were instrumental for starting record distribution in the states before Watts even could supply us. Later on.. Bulletproof really took up the slack..
it was never meant to be a "our city versus your city" thing.. but please put some respect where respect is due..
I saw DJ Soulslinger.. I wish I hadn't.. So much for NYC (though I am just saying that to razz ya.. Dara, Dank, Blueline, Odi, Jeff-ee were all great names from the East coast..
but we will never forget the names like JJ Jellybean and Phantom 45.
Thats it.. sorry if my stoned message offended anyone.. but hell you should be use to that. if you had ever read a massive.

Uhm, all nice, maybe House came from Chicago at first but Techno, which is the ancestor of Tekno/Jungle was a combination of House and the style of Kraftwerk and comes from Detroit. |
